When Is Open Enrollment in California? (And When It Doesn't Matter)

August 15, 2026 · 4 min read

Covered California runs November 1 through January 31. Miss it and you wait a year — unless you use a path where the window doesn't exist.

California gives its residents one of the longest Marketplace enrollment windows in the country: Covered California open enrollment runs from November 1 to January 31. Outside those three months, you need a qualifying life event — losing coverage, marriage, a new baby, a move — to enroll.

The qualifying-event fine print

A qualifying event opens a special enrollment period, typically 60 days. Miss the deadline or lack a qualifying event, and the Marketplace is closed to you until the next November — a genuinely long time to be uninsured or stuck on a plan you've outgrown.

Where the window doesn't exist

Private PPO plans are not Marketplace plans, and the open-enrollment calendar simply doesn't apply to them. They enroll every month of the year — March, June, September, whenever your situation changes. No qualifying event, no paperwork proving one, no waiting for November.

How to use both calendars

If Marketplace subsidies matter to your budget, respect the November–January window. If you're between the windows — or subsidies wouldn't move the needle for you — a private PPO gets you covered now instead of eventually.
